Depression can affect anyone at any age and its symptoms can look very different in children and adults.

Symptoms of depression in adults include persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, inappropriate guilt or regret, loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities, changes in appetite, disrupted sleep patterns, unexplained fatigue or loss of energy.

In younger children, symptoms of depression may include sadness, irritability, clinginess, excessive worry, complaints of headaches or stomach aches, school refusal, or unexplained weight loss.

Symptoms of depression in teens may include persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, anger, poor academic performance, school refusal, feeling misunderstood, drug or alcohol use, sleeping too much, excessive exercising or fear of gaining weight, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, loss of interest activities once enjoyed, or social isolation.
